Methylcobalamin is a coenzyme form of Vitamin B12 which is biologically active. It is the form of vitamin B12 that is active in the central nervous system and is essential for cell growth and replication. Other forms of B12, such as cyanocobalamin, require conversion to methylcobalamin by the liver, and evidence suggests that some people may not make this conversion efficiently.

Solgar's Methylcobalamin Nuggets are taken sublingually (dissolved under the tongue), which means the B12 bypasses the stomach and is absorbed directly into the blood stream.

Vitamin B12 is found in foods of animal origin, such as dairy products, eggs, fish and meat. Vegans, the elderly and people with digestive problems may be susceptible to low B12 status. It is estimated that 10% to 30% of individuals over the age of 50 have low stomach acid secretion, which is linked to poor bioavailability of B12 from food. Sublingual methylcobalamin may therefore be especially pertinent for these groups.

Vitamin B12 is important for central nervous system function, healthy red blood cells and helps maintain normal blood homocysteine levels.
