Flax Seed is richer in Omega 3 than fish oils and is also a useful source of linoleic acid, the 'parent' fatty acid to the omega 6 fatty acids, for which evening primrose is so well known. The oil obtained from Flax Seed is a minimum of 60% by weight Alpha-Linolenic Acid which is almost twice as many Omega 3's per gram of weight as fish oils. This is a suitable alternative for those who cannot tolerate fish oils or who are vegetarian.
Alpha-Linolenic Acid can be converted in the body to longer chain members such as Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). As an essential fatty acid, Alpha-Linolenic Acid is required in relatively large amounts in the diet and, together with its derivatives EPA and DHA, has been shown to be extremely useful in supporting the cardio vascular system.
