Our product provides 100mg of pure 5-HTP per tablet, without the few vitamins that are included in some formulas. We believe the rationale for the inclusion of these vitamins is weak, and is more to do with marketing than science! We are sure that the practitioner will address any possible nutrient deficiencies in a structured way, rather than relying on a small selection of nutrients included in a product such as 5-HTP.

Our bodies make 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) from tryptophan, an essential amino acid that we obtain from high protein foods such as meat and dairy products. The body uses 5-HTP to make the neurotransmitter, serotonin, whose most important actions include the regulation of mood and appetite. Tryptophan was used for many years as a safe and effective way to optimise the production of serotonin, however it was removed from the market due to problems caused by a contaminant that was created during the manufacturing of the synthetic version of the amino acid. This meant researchers turned their attention to natural sources of 5-HTP and by far the most interesting source was the seeds of an African vine called Griffonia simplicifolia. These contain a level of 5-HTP that is high enough to make commercial extraction viable, and this is now a huge industry supplying a worldwide market, with millions of people taking it for mood disorders every day. One benefit of 5-HTP over tryptophan is that it is required in much smaller quantities than tryptophan to be effective, since it needs no further modification before it passes through the blood brain barrier, to then be converted into serotonin in the brain. At Lamberts we believe that 5-HTP is a safe effective tool for practitioners, but have held back in adding it to our range simply because we could not find a source of Griffonia extract that would consistently meet our strict quality and potency criteria. This is now resolved, and our new 5-HTP product is very competitively priced as the Griffonia industry is well developed, and so the raw material price has improved considerably.

Ingredients: L-5-Hydroxytrytophan 100mg, DiCalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Cellulose, Tablet Coating (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Colour: Titanium Dioxide, Glycerin), Silicon Dioxide, Stearic Acid, Magnesium Stearate.

Directions: Up to 3 tablets daily can be taken, starting with one tablet and increasing if necessary. 5-HTP is best taken for periods of up to 3 months, and should then be stopped for a month to determine if the patient still requires it.
